Each year over 1,500 children die as a result of child abuse or child neglect. Child abuse and neglect is a complex phenomenon with several causes. Understanding the causes of abuse is crucial to addressing the problem of child abuse. The immediate physical effects of child abuse or neglect can be relatively minor. In some cases the physical effects are temporary; however, the pain and suffering they cause a child can’t be discounted. The long-term impact of child abuse and neglect on a child’s health is just beginning to be explored.
